Making a Worry List

As we chatted about last week, taking action is the best way of tackling the anxiety caused by another lockdown and general Covid stress.

This week, I tried something different. Instead of lying awake at night worrying about all the problems that will probably never happen I did something about it.

I made “A Worry List”. It’s a terrible name, I’ll need to come up with something better.

I wrote down every single thing that is bothering me or causing me anxiety. Immediately, the process of putting them down in writing made them smaller.

After each problem or worry, I wrote down one step I could take this week to tackle the problem.

I’ll report back in a few weeks if it worked but already I feel better.

Try it and let me know how you get on via Twitter.

Really fancy a pint? Go rent your own pub

This story caught my attention on Twitter this week. Three young people have rented Daly’s pub in Ennistymon and have moved in.

It is a fully functioning pub and they are living upstairs. They get to enjoy having their very own pub while creating lots of quirky content.

The people behind it are content creators and run their own production agency. I think this is simply genius.

The pub was for sale in 2018 for €240k and I actually saw this for rent a few months ago. If my memory is correct, it was appox €900 per month. Not bad for your own pub and three rooms of accommodation upstairs.

I’ve been in touch with the people behind this mad scheme so hopefully, we’ll have them on the podcast next Monday.

Most Unusual Property in Ireland

The idea of living in a pub got me thinking. With people no longer tied to cities for jobs, I set out to find 5 of the most unusual properties for sale in Ireland that you could use to start a business.

There will be opportunities like this popping up in the next 12 months as people look to repurpose interesting buildings so keep your eyes open.

1 . St Fechin’s Church

A church with a Father Ted style name is available for just €130,000. Located in Termonfeckin, hence the name, you could do all sorts of cool businesses with it. Airbnb is the first thing that springs to mind and renting it out as a location for TV/movie filming.

2 . Mannion’s Island

This 4-acre island is located just off the south coast of Cork. I love the fact is says the island is sold “as is” and is available for €150,000

There is no house or structure on the island so the idea here might be renting it out for private camping weekends or creating an adventure island with watersports.

3. Denny’s Ferry Bar & Shop

In Mayo, you can buy your own pub, shop and 2-bed house all for €265,000. Could be reestablished as a pub/shop or create a cool coffee shop or brewery.

4. Mountcashel Castle

If your plans are a little more ambitious, you can buy a castle for just €95k in Country Clare. Needs a total refit but could be reopened as a tourist attraction like Bunratty or tap into the Game of Thrones vibes for tourism.

5. Coollattin House
At the other end of the spectrum, you can buy yourself a mansion on 21 acres in Wicklow for €975k. Needing full work, I could imagine this as a country retreat hotel or wellness center. Endless possibilities on this one.

What else could you do?

The other ideas in this space are you can become a hunter of great deals for people seeking to escape the city life. You only need to look at the popularity of Instagram accounts such as Crazy House Prices to see how much Irish people love a bit of property porn.

You could also become a specialist in your area for people moving with zero connections to the area. International companies had people on retainer in Dublin who would help new hires coming from abroad to find accommodation, get their kids into schools, sort out utility bills, etc.

This Week

Cool Product

Functional Mushroom Coffee by an Irish company called 9th Degree Coffee. Sounds weird right? But it’s fantastic. The mushroom extract helps you focus & you can’t taste any difference from normal coffee.

Watching

Stumbled across a really wild YouTube channel about a guy who has bought an entire ghost town in California. He is on a mission to renovate the entire village and is documenting the entire process.

Reading

Lifespan by David Sinclair. A book about living longer. Who doesn’t want that? Kindly given to me by a friend of mine, it’s been on my wish list for a while. Just starting but will let you know if it is worth a read or I discover the magic of living forever.

The podcast goes live at 5 am every Monday and Thursday.

On the podcast last week

Last week on the podcast, I chatted with Mark O’Reilly, a personal coach to some of Ireland’s elite CEOs, entrepreneurs and leaders. You can listen here.
